Child development theories are an organized set of principles designed to explain and predict something. Below are some major child development theorists and their theories. Jean Piaget – (1896-1980) was originally a biologist before going on to study the development of children’s understanding. He studied children by observing them talking and listening to them whilst he set them tasks to carry out. He came up with the ‘Maturation Theory’ which means that a child simply grows up and as they grow they become able to understand more. He was said to have proposed that a child’s thinking doesn’t develop evenly, but it will ‘take off’ and move into new areas and abilities. He suggested that these changes normally occurred around the age of 18 months, 7 years and 11-12 years. Piaget’s key ideas – Schema- The child makes up a theory from experiences from their environment. Equilibrium – A child’s experiences seem to fit the schema. (Everything makes sense. ) Disequilibrium – A child experiences an event that makes them reconsider their schema. (Things don’t quite make sense. ) Accommodation – The child changes their original schema that now fits in with their new experiences. Piaget’s stages of cognitive development: Sensory – motor – 0-2 years Pre- operation – 2-7 years Concrete operational – 7-11 years Formal operational – 11-15 years Piaget’s influence today – Piaget’s work has led to early years settings and frameworks in the EYFS becoming more ’child Centred’ and providing more hands on work for children John Broadus Watson – (1878-1958) came up with the idea of behaviourism as a movement. He believed that differences in behaviour were due to children’s different experiences of learning. He took up the work of Ivan Pavlov who had previously worked with dogs. Pavlov noticed that dogs would salivate before their food arrived; they had associated other factors with their food being delivered (People’s footsteps and the noise of a bucket. ) Pavlov then went on to develop an experiment where bells were sounded when the dogs were fed. Eventually the dogs salivated simply when they heard the bell. This was called ‘classical conditioning’. Watson wondered if classical conditioning would work on humans. In an experiment that would be unethical today Watson did research with a 9 month old baby called Little Albert. He was tested on his reactions to many objects and he initially showed no fear to any of them. There was one thing that did cause the baby distress and this was when a hammer was struck on a steel bar behind his head. The loud noise made Little Albert cry. At the age of 11 months a white rat was shown to the boy and the hammer would strike the bar. This was repeated several times over the next seven weeks. Albert only had to see the rat and he would immediately cry (even if the hammer didn’t strike the bar. ) They had proved that Classical Conditioning could be used to create a phobia. Watson’s influence today – Watson’s Classical Conditioning is not used in childcare practice. But we use the principles in the way e. g. a child knowing its lunch time when a bell rings or in nursery’s song time before lunch. Burrus Skinner – (1904-1990) believed that the best way to understand behaviour was to look at the causes of an action and its consequences or reinforcements. He named this process as â€Å"Operant Conditioning†. Skinner experimented with rats rewarding them with food when they displayed behaviour he wanted, in this case pressing a lever. The rats learned to repeat the rewarded behaviour. They would systematically press the lever and wait at the position where the food was dispensed. He called this â€Å"Positive Reinforcement†. He also taught the rats to display behaviour he didn’t want – he gave them electric shocks when they entered a certain area of a maze he created. They learned to avoid the area. Skinner’s influence today – Most childcare Practitioners will use Operant Conditioning in settings every day. We reward children with praise, attention and sometimes tangible items like stickers, when they are well behaved, to encourage children to repeat the desirable behaviour. Abraham Maslow – (1908-1970) – stated that human motivation is based on humans seeking fulfilment and change through personal growth before they could fulfil their potential or â€Å"Self-Actualisation†. Maslow found fifteen characteristics of a self-actualized person, which he made into a pyramid and this was known as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Maslow’s influence today – When working with children and young people it is vital that their basic needs are meet – warmth, food, shelter – combined with having their psychological needs met – love and promotion of their self-esteem. Early years settings need to think about the environment that they create for children in their care. Albert Bandura – (1925) is a figure amongst Social Learning Theorists. These theories acknowledge the principles of conditioning but put forward the theory that people learn in other ways, by watching and copying others (Observational Learning. ) This form of learning is spontaneous and means the child does not, Bandura’s work interestedly links behaviourist and cognitive theories, because it draws together attention, memory and motivation. Bandura’s influence today – Children learn a lot of their behaviour from observing others. Having good positive role models in their lives is important as children will imitate that good behaviour. Child centred settings promote positive role modelling with all practitioners employed in the settings. Sigmund Freud – (1856-1939) was an Austrian Neurologist for the theories of the unconscious mind and creating Psychoanalysis, which is used to explain the unconscious thoughts. His development shaped how people received counselling and Therapeutic work, although his theories have now been replaced by other methods. Freud had suggested that there were three parts that made up a person’s personality- The Id – this is the instinctive part of the personality. It is ruled by the body’s needs, such as hunger or finding pleasure. However, this part of the personality doesn’t take into account how our wants and desires will impact on others. It was suggested that babies will cry until they get fed or receive comfort no matter how tired their carer is or whether there are other children that need feeding. This is known as gratification. The Ego – This is the planning part of the personality. It works out how to meet the Id’s needs in the best way. Babies might learn that when they smile they are likely to get their needs met. In certain situations the ego may make the Id wait for its needs to be met e. g. children might learn that if they take something that doesn’t belong to them that it may be taken away from them, but if they wait to be offered the item, they will eventually get it. This is known as â€Å"Deferred Gratification†. This part of the personality is known as the common sense part. The superego – develops later in childhood. It tries to control the Ego and is made up of two elements, the conscious and the Ego-Ideal – the conscience punishes the Ego if it misbehaves. This is where our guilt comes from. The Ego Ideal will reward the Ego if it behaves correctly. This is where our pride and confidence come from. Math in Early Childhood Article Review Essay The purpose of this article was to explain the use and importance of programs such as the, â€Å"What’s the Big Idea† program instituted at the Bennington Library in Vermont. The â€Å"What’s the Big Idea† program aims to provide librarians with techniques and tools for introducing preschool and kindergarten students to science and math through literature. Picture books and stories are used a lot because stores are great conveyors to memorable messages about since and math. It also gives children the tools they need to be able to look at books and seek out math and science concepts and connections within the text. The program focuses on child directed and hands on explorations rather that adult directed instruction allowing the children to gain personal acts of discovery through play. â€Å"What’s the Big Idea† focuses on four main math and science concepts; numbers and operations, patterns and relationships, changes over time, and geometry and special sense. For each topic there are activities, projects, and books that correspond with the chosen topic. There are different activity centers that are also set up. Some are set up for large group and small group and some are set up for independent exploration. They offer things such as interactive graphs, geoboards, jars with small objects for sorting, blocks, and other manipulatives. Something new that I learned was that I didn’t know that libraries offered programs like that. I knew that had reading groups and programs but I didn’t realizes that there were also libraries that offered programs to also promote math and science concepts as well. I like how they use books first to gain an idea and then tie it into math and science by exploring the concepts in the story a little further to better their understanding not only of the story but of the math and/or science behind it. A way that I can see this information being useful in the future is to have programs like this available to all libraries nationwide. In the article it said that it started out in Vermont and spread to libraries in New York, Delaware, and Texas. With children having access to programs like this from the preschool level they will then enter kindergarten with a greater knowledge base and with deeper understanding of the math and science concepts that they will need for the rest of their lives.

Odysseus is a hero of all times thanks to Homer who wrote his story in The Odyssey. Odysseus is a hero in his on time because of all his adventures and characteristics. Homer wrote about the Trojan War, in which Odysseus took part in, in the Iliad, and about Odysseus’ long journey home in, The Odyssey. There have been theories that suggest that Homer was illiterate and could not have possibly recited poems of these lengths by memory, and that they were put together much later on and added to. However, there is evidence that a city, possible Troy, existed and was destroyed. Also there was a kingdom of Ithica which allows for a king Odysseus. Even if the King did not go to the war there was still a chance that he might have existed. In the Odyssey, Homer used a narrative structure to tell his stories. The original texts were wrote on papyrus scrolls and it is theorized that these scrolls each told a chapter in Homers plays. The modern version of The Odyssey is a combination of all these scrolls that could have existed as separate stories about Odysseus’ travels, his encounters, and how he obtained his status as a hero. Ancient Greece has always been an interest of mine. In 6th grade a teacher that I had know for my whole schooling showed a movie every week. One week we watched â€Å"Jason and the Argonaughts†. Ever since then I could never get enough Greek mythology. In freshman year of high school we read the annotated text book version of The Odyssey. Lucky for me, I transferred English classes at the semester and I was able to read The Odyssey twice. And since then Odysseus has been a hero to me. The story starts in book 9, Odysseus telling his story to the King of Phaeaica. They sacked a city then sailed away when faced with opposing force. Next, they landed on the island of the lotus-eaters. After Odysseus pried his crew away from the lotus-eaters, they landed on the island of the Cyclops. Here is where Odysseus displays all his heroic qualities. Odysseus picked twelve of the best warriors from his crew to accompany him on the visit to the Cyclops, Polyphemus, and son of the god that shakes the Earth, Poseidon. Polyphemus takes Odysseus captive and proceeds to eat his warriors for meals. Odysseus dreams up an ingenious plan.

A recreational drug is categorized as any substance with pharmacologic effects that is either taken voluntarily for personal pleasure, or for satisfaction rather than for medicinal purposes such as cocaine, marijuana, or ecstasy. These types of drugs are easily found and are used by more than 22 million Americans ages 12 and older; nearly nine percent of the U. S. population. If these types of drugs were to be made legal, a positive change in the economy would be the ultimate outcome.In 1961, the United Nations implemented an international treaty that limited drug roduction and trafficking. The â€Å"war on drugs†, a term that was created by Richard Nixon a decade later, in reference to said treaty, has been going on for over fifty years now. The original objective of the â€Å"war on drugs† was to expel all recreational drugs from the country; making all of them illegal. The U. S. currently has the highest incarceration rate in the world. The bulk of those imprisoned are due to drug-related crimes. They notice that the minimum wages they would legally receive from their unskilled labor at the local Burger King, is far from what they could earn buying and selling illegal drugs.By the time children nd teenagers leave high school, most of these students have committed a criminal act by using recreational drugs. These drugs are used every day and widely available, people see â€Å"breaking the law' as nothing more than playful mischief; therefore, undermining our laws authority. In contrast to the spiraling ineffectiveness of the U. S. government's original approac h to controlling the issue of recreational drugs, other countries like New Zealand and Ireland have taken on a new outlook on the matter.Instead of outlawing he use of recreational drugs, they have decided to do extensive research on these drugs, in effect making sure that they are safe for the public's consumption. They are conducting clinical tests to prove that their products are safe; Just like new medicine would be tested in the market. If our government would go along with this new radical movement and legalized recreational drugs, like these other countries, they would no longer have a â€Å"war on drugs†. The money spent on inmates in Jails would be greatly reduced since we are not arresting people for drug use.Police can use the time currently monopolized on getting drugs off the street for other, more pressing crimes. Schools could teach their students about wise drug usage instead of implementing scare tactics. Tactics such as videos and statistics about drug abuse and its consequences that will only tell you to never purchase or use them are simply in effective; that Just leads to ignorant abuse in the future. All legalized drugs can be sold by trust worthy companies instead of fellow schoolmates or sketchy street dealers.These drugs can be bought legally, by someone of government consented age, in proper packages witn appropriate warning labels; similar to the way that cigarettes and alcohol are. In conclusion, legalizing recreational drugs goes far beyond â€Å"right and wrong† if you look at the issue in a practical manner. The problem of illegal recreational drugs has only been increasing with time. The current policies in place are Just not working. A new, radical approach could be the ultimate solution to the U. S. government's uphill battle. After all, the legalizing has already begun, hasn't it?
